Bascidiomycota

Common Name : Club Fungi

The clublike shape of the basidium gives rise to the common name club fungus. Bascidiomycetes are important decomposers of wood and other plant material. Of all the fungi saprobic bacidiomycetes are best at decomposing the complex polymer lignin an abundant component of wood. Periodically in responce to environmental stimuli mycelium reproduces sexually by producing fruiting bodies called basidiocarps. A mushroom is a familiar example.
